I use gimp all the time now. There are lots of tutorials if you google the effect you want to create. I sometimes use iPiccy to alter a photo and then bring it back into gimp to finish with Layers and shadows.

My friend has just downloaded craft artist compact . It gives you a large amount of the originals and for free too.you may get chance of an earlier version of craft artist which would be ok with your pc. I also thought photo shop did a free download in the same manner.

I use and love MyMemories!!! It's a great program for the price, (less than $30). You can use page kits you purchase from the site, and page kits purchased from other sites. It's a quick program to learn and their website/forum has a lot of "how to" instructions. You can download a "free" trial version. I did that and then after about 2-3 months they sent me a coupon code for $10 off the price of the software and another $10 in free downloads. Hope this helps. Come back and let us know what software you decided on and how you like it.
