In Case You Were Wondering...

Me Myself and I

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...this is what I look like. I often wonder what so many of you look like, too. Why is it that we don't scrap ourselves? I can tell you that for me it's two things...I don't have many pictures of myself and I don't have many of those pictures of myself that I like what I look like.
Why is that? What's wrong with having someone else take the family picture so you can be in it? We are members of the family, too. In fact, we are the glue for the family yet we're often left out of the picture. Is it also that, like me, so many of us don't like what we look like in pictures? I know that my DBF doesn't like what he looks in pics either. However, I am the scrapper (the life preserver) so it's ME who decides who is in the layouts. Sounds fair, right? Yes and no.
Yes, cuz we want to make sure all those important events and changes in the children are documented. But also no because who's going to document our history and our changes? Come on...you haven't had the same hairstyle all your life! What about those elementary school pictures with the Dorothy Hamill haircut? Or the 70's Farrah Fawcett wings. And, don't forget those 80's ratted out styles where you looked like a poodle! Personally, I always wanted my hair to look like CeCe Devilles (from Poison).
I'm going to issue a challenge and them I'm going to post the challenge. Scrap yourself...Create your own album that's all about you and only you! There are other members here who have posted layouts about themselves. I only recently created this one of myself as a favor to a friend. She is hosting a zodiac challenge at another site and asked me to post for her. So, I did...I was surprised to find out that I am exactly like my sign (Cancer). But, how will my grandchildren or my great-grandchildren know this if someone doesn't tell them. What if my children don't continue to enjoy scrapbooking like I do? Well then...it's my job to do it!
I issue this challenge to all of you...SCRAP YOURSELF!!! You and only you! For you are important and your history deserves to be shared!

You can run...but you can't hide!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...those of us in a majority of the United States are entering into our winter season.

I love winter.

I love how pretty it looks...before the kids stomp all over it and the dogs...well, you know.

I love the holidays and how they make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside...except when it's following a huge holiday meal.

I love the look in a child's eye when they see the tree all lit up after you turn the lights out...the look of "Hey! I was trying to count my presents!"

I love sitting around remembering Christmas' past...and kicking myself for not following through with last year's plan to tone it down this year.

I'm just kidding! I truly love the holiday season...even if I'm completely exhausted when it's all over. It seems to be all about the kids. Helping them get all bundled up in their snowsuites might be a bit of a chore...but the laughter they bring while I watch them waddle outside and fall down backwards making snow angel after snow angel is well worth it!

I hope that you will all...no matter where in the world you are...have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS/HANUKAH/RAMADAN/KWANZAA & MANY BLESSINGS FOR A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR AHEAD!

Happy Thanksgiving...to Americans and non-Americans alike!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...This is my beautiful family and I am most thankful for them! Thanksgiving is celebrated in other countries, but not all! Here in America, it's become more about the meal and the football (American-style). I'm having 19 people over for the feast this year. My first with my boyfriend's family. As I am stressing over the state of the house (in particular the girl's bedroom) and whether the turkey is going to be thawed on-time; I find myself forgetting what the day is really all about.

I haven't seen it yet but there is a new movie coming out here in the States...The Pursuit of Happyness. I find myself crying...sobbing in fact...at the previews of this movie. It's about a man who is on the brink of losing everything and yet has a young son to care for. He takes an internship...unpaid...because the end result is a higher paying job. They sleep in homeless shelters and in subway station bathrooms! He had nothing but what he and his son could carry yet he was a joyful father to his son...and so very brave! (I'm watching the Will Smith interview with Oprah right now and I'm crying so hard right now, I may electricute myself typing this...lol).

What I"m getting at is that for so many of us...myself included, have been through tough times. I lost my daughter's father 18 months ago. I would complain about life not being fair to us. But, I have a loving boyfriend, a supportive family and two incredible daughters who frequently remind that their daddy is not gone, in fact, he's with us all the time now! So, I'm inspired to thank God daily for what I have and I'm not sure, after seeing the previews...and I will see the movie, that I will never again ask God, why me? I have so much more than I realized a few minutes ago.

So, I wish all my scrapbooking friends worldwide to have a Happy Thanksgiving and blessings on you and your family that you are all as rich as I am...rich in LOVE...rich in FRIENDSHIP...rich in LIFE!

Big not-so-big moments...

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING....what does that mean? I had to ask myself if I completely understood what I was trying to say. My daughter, Amelia, is 8 years old. She's a cheerleader (that's obvious). It has become an all-consuming role in her life and, I'm ok with that.

We moved to our hometown this past summer. We used to live in the big city and she participated in a pom-pom group that ran for 6-weeks and ended with a recital...another 6 weeks, another recital. When we moved, it was too far away to make the 1/2 hour drive for a 45 minute practice one night a week. So, a friend of a friend told me about the cheerleading team at the local gymnastics club. I signed Amelia up for a cheer clinic and she was hooked! She was pretty good, too. The pom-pom background was a big help. She was invited to try-out for the team and (of course) was invited to join.

It's been a great motivator for her to keep her room clean and her grades up. She's gained a ton of confidence and self-esteem and she's gone from being a chunky little girl to a not-so-chunky girl. What's most important, is she's found something that she loves, something that she can continually work at and improve upon. It's something that she sees herself doing for a long time. She wants to be a cheerleading coach when she grows up. My only complaint is her new favorite show is Making the Team: The Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. She says she doesn't want to be one of them...they show too much of their boobs (LOLOL).

Her very first competition was this past weekend. I didn't realize how much fun it was going to be and that I'd actual be proud to be a cheerleading mom! Amelia was very nervous and had actually thrown up after her dress practice on Thursday. I told her that I was proud of her no matter what happened. All I expected out of her was to get on the mat and to do the best that she could do. Amazingly, she ran out onto the mat waving at the judges and smiling the biggest most beautiful smile I'd ever seen on her face. She and her team did a fantastic job! I cried and cried and couldn't stop telling her how proud I was of her and that whether they placed or not...I was the proudest mom there was in that whole coliseum!

Secretly though, I hoped that they would place. For her confidence. It's hard as a parent to tell your child to do their best...they do but than aren't rewarded. Thus, trying to make a Big moment not-so-big. Well, they took first place! More cheering and screaming (I lost my voice) and lots more crying! I hope that someday you have a moment in your child's life where you can feel the way that I did for her on Saturday. It was one of the greatest moments of her short life. Still, what's most important is to tell her that you are proud of her...not the trophy or the medal...HER! We have a long season ahead and while I hope that there are a lot more medals and trophies...I hope that she gains a stronger sense of pride in herself rather than shiny things on a shelf.

I think this photo of her is beautiful and it shows her joy and her pride in herself! I'm proud to say..."I'M A CHEERLEADING MOM!" (If you had told me back in high school that I'd be saying that someday...I would have thought you were crazy!)

What's Most Important...

Wow! I've been neglecting my little blog here. All I can say is...Life Happens! Not that I haven't been scrapping...I'm on three Creative Teams that keep me very busy and most recently I had some serious computer problems. The result...I lost a lot of things that I had stored on my hard drive...paperwork, software programs, games things that really aren't all that important. BUT! I also lost pictures and scrapbook layouts! That reduced me to tears...ok...honestly...it left me sobbing for hours. I'm still nauseous from thinking about it!

So, here goes the topic...What's really most important to you? I'm lucky that I visit scrapbooking communities and post my layouts. I've been able to save most of them to disc and my brand new external hard drive. That's allowed me to also get back some of my most favorite photos. But, not all of them. So, I cry some more...alright...ALOT more. My little girls cried too because pictures of Girl Scout Camp and Cheerleading that weren't yet scrapped are now lost forever. Along comes the brave mommy (but only on the outside) and tells them that while the pictures are nice, it's the memories that are the most important.

I recently scrapped two similar layouts. One for my late husband and one for my boyfriend/soul mate/the one I'm met to end up with. Eloquent words are not always easy to come by and so I took up a challenge to use a song. For Mike's it was important to me to use a song that not only apologized for all the things I said that I didn't mean and to say a few of the things that should have been said but weren't. Those are hard feelings to have. If we don't restrain ourselves from the hurtful words and find the courage to say the ones that should be heard...we may not get another chance to do so! That's why I decided to do a layout, using words far better than I could compose, for Randy. I want him to know how I feel about our relationship, our meeting and my new life with him.

I challenge you to do the same. If the words are hard to come by...find a song or a poem and create a layout for the person you need to reach out to. Whether you need to apologize for something you said or did or if you just need to tell that someone special just how special they are. You may not get another chance to do so...don't miss the opportunity to create a happy, warm-fuzzy memory. Afterall, it isn't the picture that keeps the memory...it's the heart!

Life Keeps Us Busy

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...where I've been this time. School started for my two darling daughter's last week. Samantha is in First Grade and Amelia is in Third Grade at a new school this year. They went to a alternative curriculum school last year. Their focus was success levels...they attended classes at their skill levels. Their new school is traditional...second graders in second grade. They've been through a lot of change lately. Their father died, we moved, new school...but change isn't all bad. And as I look at Sam's last year "1st day of school" and this years I realize that change is good...change happens and it can't be stopped. So, we might as well embrass it. My baby is growing up and I can't be happeir for her. What changes are you experiencing? Put it to "paper" and show us!

1st Stop...Scrapbook Flair!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...my digital scrapbooking skills are improving. I'm learning alot from surfing the web and paying close attention to what others are posting here at this site. This is my latest creation. The background is created from a cropped corner of the original picture. I tediously erased around my daughter and her dad and than made it black and white. It was a lot of hard work but I think it paid of in the end.

Scrapbook Flair is the place that got me started and I am so grateful. Lots of other sites have wonderfully talented members who post the most magnificent layouts. It was very intimidating to make my first posts. I LOVE that Scrapbook Flair has such a wide range of members. It's great to see the kids and the teens. Those who are doing any kind of scrapbooking for the first time.

I'm not so intimidated to post at other sites now. But, I will never stop making my daily (or twice or three times daily) trips to Scrapbook Flair! It's a wonderful site for beginniners and when I have someone say, "I want to do that," my response is always...Scrapbook Flair!

It's a 3-peat!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...what I mean by that...my youngest daughter is the new Scrapbook of the Week. And, while I am happy for her, I'm also relieved. She would have been devastated if she didn't get the honor. So, thank you to everyone who voted for her page. I love scrapbooking with the girls, the little on in particular. They have such new and refreshing ideas and they know what they like and what they don't. Me? I sit and I stare and than I shift some things around and stare some more. Not children. They place it...they like it! They don't care if words go into the picture. With her layout, she did just that...and ya know...I like it too...now. I tend to be a neat, square, very simple designer. The girls like little things here and there. I may be a Scrapbook of the Week title holder myself...but I most certainly have a lot to learn from the two most recent winners. I hope that you have the chance to scrapbook with a child...they will open your eyes to a whole new way of seeing things!

A Family That Scrapbooks Together

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...why I don't have any pages posted with this post it's because I'd like for you to visit two other home pages. Cheer Girl and Pumpkin Baby are my daughters. We all love to scrapbook. I haven't been able to create any new pages of my own because I promised the girls to help them with the two that they have each posted. In fact, I am proud to say that I had the Scrapbook of the Week last week and this week it's Cheer Girl! Pumpkin Baby (the name of her favorite stuffed animal, a bear in a pumpkin outfit) just posted her first two pages...the tears if she doesn't win...oh boy! I'm fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom and a crafty mom, too. It gives me great pleasure to do activities with my girls, and my "step-daughter" (her dad and I live together but we're not married -- yet!). I think some parents find that if they sit at the computer making a scrapbook page than it's taking away from their time to work on the 'puter or doing housework. Others, I know, don't want the kids "wasting" their paper or playing with their "good" scissors or punches. But, why not share with them something that you are passionate...and protective about? It will not only give you time together but it will show the kids that they are valuable to you as well! I've made the suggestion that Scrapbook Flair have a gallery of pages made just by kids. Have you seen Foxer's work? It's too cute! So, get the kids by your side, show them how to create a page or if they're on the little side, like mine, help them out! I can't describe the smile and the pride on their faces when they see that page with THEIR name under it! Remember, the family that scrapbooks together is having FUN together!

Where Girls Grow Strong...

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...why I haven't posted in a couple of days...I'm at Girl Scout Camp with my daughters...and 100 other "adopted" daughters during the day. We're having a blast learning how to build a fire, make lunch on a stick and not lose it in the fire, how to eat a s'more without getting it all over your face...and hands...and legs...and of course, eating Girl Scout Cookies. Girl Scouting is a wonderful opportunity for girls to have fun without being treated like a porcelin doll or a "little" girl. Girls can get dirty and have fun and be encouraged to get dirty. My daughter Amelia is 8 year's old. (Check out her pages that she's made and posted. She's Cheer Girl) This is her 3rd year at camp so she's a veteran. Samantha is 5 and just graduated from Kindergarten. She's a "real" camper this year, not a Pixie (pixie's are younger/other children of camp staff ages 3-12 who are allowed to come to camp. They are their own unit but they don't do the same things as the campers. They're allowed to come so that mom's can come and help out...nice!) She's the tiniest one in her unit but she's got the biggest spirit! Me? I'm the first aider...my first patient of the day was Amelia (a real injury...she cut her leg). I guess what I'm trying to tell you is to get out there and volunteer. It doesn't have to be with Girl Scouts, just pick something that you are passionate about and just do it. Take your "hand" scrapbooking materials and visit the children's ward at the local hospital or visit bed-bound mom's-to-be (I've done this...they love it!!!) have them scrapbook their babies ultrasound picture or pictures of mommy and daddy. There are so many wonderful causes and appreciative organizations. In the words of Nike...JUST DO IT!

What is this?

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...This is the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. It's located in Washington, D.C. However, it's tucked away in the middle of nothing special. It's not even within walking distance of any of the other memorials or sites. It was a must see on our November trip...my boyfriend (I hate that term...I'm 35 with two kids and he's got two kids. Makes me feel 16 again. Partner gives people the wrong impression and companion makes me feel like I'm a senior citizen...oh well, anyway) my boyfriend is a Police Sergeant. I am so glad that we went to see it. It's beautiful and even though it's in a busy neighborhood, it's very peaceful. It is flanked on either side by these low-lying, curved white walls. Both of the walls bear the names of Law Enforcement Officers (police, FBI, prison guards and jailers) who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Did you know that 31 of 75 officers killed last year lost their lives due to automobile accidents and 5 of those were outside of their vehicles on stops. Please...be aware of officers that are pulled over to the side of the road . They are attempting to keep you safe on the road...please do the same for them. These men and women are not "fuzz" or "pigs" they are husbands/wives, fathers/mothers, sons/daughters who are just doing their jobs and they are all loved by someone!

A Winner!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...Why am I posting this page on my blog...again? Well, I have to pat myself on the back...wait...I need to wipe a few tears. Ok, I'm better now! I can't believe it...my first Scrapbook Flair page is the Scrapbook of the Week! I am in awe. Like I said before, it's taken me a number of years to actually complete this page. Although, my goal was to complete it the "traditional" way...I am more than happy with the digital result and am just pleased that I finally did a tribute to my uncle. I guess the lesson here is that it doesn't matter how the memories are put down...just get them down! Scrapbook Flair is helping me do just that...getting the pages out of the file folder/box and into the world to be shared! Thank you to everyone who voted for my page. I was proud of it when I completed it and now I am...speechless! In the words of the wonderful Sally Fields...You like me! You really like me! LOLOL! Thanks again and good luck to eveyone posting!

A Tribute to the Tributes...

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING... I just posted my latest page and it might seem strange to some people. I'm from an average size city - Racine, Wisconsin. We're between Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL on the shores of the Great Lake Michigan. Racine boasts the largest parade in Wisconsin...it's long...real long...no less than 3 hours! I'm not kidding. Well, back to my page. We have these 5 amazing floats, three of which are featured. They are real life veteran's replicating three of the veteran memorials in Washington, DC. They are the Marine Corps Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Women's Memorial. The other two not featured are the Boys of 1776 and the Spirit of '76. I didn't include them on this page because I didn't have good shots of them and I don't have pictures of the actual memorials...I don't know that they even exist. As they move along the parade route, a kind of wave happens. Everyone stands, children and women place their hands on their hearts, men remove their caps. There is a moment of silence for those who these memorials honor and than a roar of applause for the 9 men and 3 women who paint themselves up and remain motionless for blocks. The 5 men who are on the Marine Corps Memorial have this wonderful ritual. They have dog tags bearing the names of the actual men who raised the American flag at Mt. Suribachi (I'm sorry but I know I probably spelled that wrong). Each man wears the dog tab of the veteran he is portraying. Most people might think that only a really crazy person would chose to wear military garb and body paint in 90 degree weather remaining motionless for three hours. Not so, in Racine, Wisconsin...it is an honor!

Touching History...literally!

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING... I'm in a somber scrapbooking mode right now. Most of my pages are dark colors and memorials or tributes.

This is THE flag that flew over the Pentagon just after 9-11. It's faded and has some dirty marks on it. When you enter the Smithosians Museum of American History it's just inside the rotunda hanging with the information board in front of it. I got the four smaller pictures cropped from a picture of that board. The flag is not behind glass or ropes or barracades of any kind. There weren't a whole lot of people milling around at that time so after I snapped the pictures, I walked right up and grabbed the lower right corner. WOW! I can not tell you the incredible feeling you get when you actually get to touch a piece of history!

During that same visit, we got to see THE Star Spangled Banner. It's behind glass and is in the process of being preserved. You can't take pictures of it but just seeing it...again...WOW!

I had a family friend killed in the second tower on 9-11. Scott Johnson. He was able to get a call out to his family just before the second tower was hit. The family figures that the second plane plowed right into his floor giving him no chance to escape. I dedicate this page to him and all those lost on that day that we can never forget

My First Scrapbook Flair Page

IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...

This is the first page that I created using this program. It's a page that I've been wanting to complete for several years. In fact, I have a started page from 2001...I just couldn't find the right embellishements, pens...what have you.

So, when I came upon this software, it was kind of like my savior. It not only saved me money, but an incredible amount of time!

I'm a history buff and I can't wait to make my third trip to Washington, D.C. I love the patriotic feeling and the pride that the visitors have. Never having met my Uncle, I am drawn to the different Veteran's memorials...the Vietnam one's, of course, more than others. I've volunteered at the Wall's moving memorial and that's how I came upon the information that is included on the page. One can only imagine the tremendous sense of loss I felt when I learned that he had only been in Vietnam for 10 short days before he was killed. So, I felt it was important to complete a page in his memory and that it be simple yet very direct. I hope it inspires you to create a memorial to any military heroes that you know and love and maybe even long to see again...or wish you had the chance to meet.

I'm what I call a passionate scrapper. I put alot of thought (maybe too much) into my pages. And, as you will soon see, I go through phases in the themes and styles of my pages. So, here's the inspiration and thoughts that inspired me to create the pages you find here. In Case You Were Wondering...
