Here is a step by step way to color B&WS:
1. Open Photoshop any version will work (If you don't have get it here you have to sign up but it's free https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop&loc=en&promoid=EBYEU.)
2. Open your b&w in Photoshop. Make sure it clean of scratches and any other things. Having a clean photo makes it easier to color
3. Go up to Image>Mode and make sure it's set RGB Color before you start.
3. In the Layers Palette click the new Layer icon. Make sure the Layer Mode (first dropdown menu on the palette is set to color and the opacity is set to 70% and the Fill is set to 62% for more realistic look.
4. Grab your Brush tool. In the Brush Properties (The toolbox on the top of screen.) select Color from the dropdown menu and opacity & fill is kept to 100%. Make sure your hardness is set to 0
5. Start painting from the head down I use e8ad8f for the skin. It is a good idea to use the swatches palette. Just click the new color button the one that looks like a piece of paper.
6. Keep track of your layers name each one so you don't get confused.
