blending in photoshop

can anyone please give me a link to a tutorial or explain how to do blending in photoshop. I am specifically looking on how to blend an image in the center of the page NOT along the edge. I can use a gradient to blend 2 edges together using a linear gradient but a photo in the center gradients do not work ( tried radial gradient which I thought would be used but doesn't do anything). the only way i know to blend is to use a soft brush to erase away but that still doesn't give the nice fade that a gradient does. I know we have a lots of photoshop and PSE users here so I would love to hear how you all do it.

to further clarify using mary's icon as an example and the water dragon that is not placed along the edge. she said she used the radial gradient in her software to blend in the water dragon. I tried radial gradient in photoshop and it does not work for me. I realize I must be doing something wrong but have no idea what as all blending tutorials i can find when they mention gradient only use a linear one and that I can use.
