The story behind the picture is that this little girl was on her way to a feeding station when she collapsed. Carter was not permitted to have contact with the people because of disease. He took the picture instead. The NYTimes published it, he won the pultzer and shortly after killed himself. Depression from seeing so much violence took it's toll.

The small hand at the corner was taken in 1980. A kid in Uganda about to die of hunger, and a missionaire. The main picture is a Sudaneese girl. The photo was taken by Kevin Carter. Here is a great article about him: http://backissues.cjrarchives.org/year/94/6/apartheid.asp

This is so sad, since I was a little girl I have seen pictures like this.... when will it stop. If you ask me - never. I don't know why we can't help these poor people in a better way than we already do. This is a huge problem in Africa and with civilian wars so many places it doesn't make the situation better. Great page to put into the challenge - but a very sad story behind.

i cried when i first saw this image and i can understand how real scenes like this could drive one to insanity or suicide like in the case of that photographer. a very sad but powerful scrap done so beautifully, 10+10!
