The 'front parlour' would not be used by the family except for 'high days and holidays' and usually had a fusty un-used smell about it! It was where visitors gathered when there was a family wedding, or funeral, a Christening, or Christmas etc.And Heaven help any child who spilled crumbs or a drink in there! The entertainment would be someone playing the piano, and the family would ALL be expected to sing!
