I hope you continue spending loads of time with him. I have mentored two teens, and feel like I reached one of them . . . They lost their mom ten years before losing their dad. Also, check into your local free counseling service for kids. Here, we have a place where children who have lost a parent can come together with kids their age, talk, do arts, and learn that it is OK to be happy again.

Oh, that just breaks my heart, as I remember my grandchildren being so unhappy after their mother was killed. My son-in-law got therapy for my grand children, this might be what you will have to do.
